How it works
Child Counselling and Play Therapy in Barrie for Ages 5 to 12
Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling. Instead, worries, frustration and sadness can show up as tantrums, trouble sleeping, school refusal or changes in behaviour. Our Barrie child therapists use play therapy and age-appropriate tools to help kids express emotions, build coping skills and feel safe, while giving parents practical strategies for home.
We support families from Barrie, Innisfil, Springwater, Oro-Medonte and Essa, in person or online, with no waitlist.

Your roadmap
The Family TLC Method: Your Path to Success
1
Intake Phase
Getting started
The therapist makes sure parents are fully informed about child counselling, what to expect and their involvement in the process, with an opportunity to ask questions and share their insights and concerns.
2
Discovery Phase
Understanding your child
The therapist gets to know your child, understands what they are experiencing and hears the concerns and goals that brought your family to counselling. From that understanding, they develop a Care Plan with clear goals.
3
Working Phase
Working toward your child’s goals
The therapist and your child work directly on the goals in the Care Plan, adapting how they work to your child’s age, development and way of communicating, and adjusting when something is not helping.
4
Check-In Phase
Building on progress
As your child becomes more able to use what they have been working on outside counselling, appointments become less frequent. The therapist keeps checking how things are going and whether anything needs attention.
5
Follow-Up Phase
Staying connected
When regular counselling is no longer needed, active counselling ends. Your child remains connected to Family TLC and can return if counselling is needed again in the future.

A story like yours
How One Barrie Family Made Bedtime Calmer
This story is about a seven-year-old boy from Barrie, a composite of many children we see. After his parents separated, bedtime turned into tears and big outbursts, and mornings before school were a struggle for the whole family.
His mom spoke with our Matching Specialist, who matched him with a child therapist who uses play therapy. Through play and drawing, he found words for his feelings and simple ways to calm down. Bedtime still has hard nights, but there are fewer of them.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Our child counselling supports children ages 4 to 12. Therapists tailor each session to your child’s developmental stage, using play, art, games and conversation to help them understand and manage their emotions in a way that feels natural.
Play is how children naturally communicate. In play therapy, a trained therapist uses toys, art and games to help children express feelings, work through difficult experiences and practise new skills. It’s especially helpful for kids who struggle to talk about what’s bothering them.
Parents are an important part of the process. Your therapist will meet with you to understand your concerns and share progress, and will offer practical strategies to use at home. Parent support is built into the work so changes carry over into everyday family life.
Yes, the matching consultation for parents is free, with no pressure to book. Therapy sessions are paid services. Our Matching Specialist will explain session fees and availability and help you choose the right child therapist for your family.
Our therapists help children with anxiety, anger and big emotions, behaviour challenges, grief and loss, trauma, low self-esteem, social difficulties and adjusting to changes like separation, a new sibling or a move. If you’re unsure, our Matching Specialist can help you decide on next steps.
