Your roadmap

1

Intake Phase

Getting started

The therapist makes sure parents are fully informed about child counselling, what to expect and their involvement in the process, with an opportunity to ask questions and share their insights and concerns.

2

Discovery Phase

Understanding your child

The therapist gets to know your child, understands what they are experiencing and hears the concerns and goals that brought your family to counselling. From that understanding, they develop a Care Plan with clear goals.

3

Working Phase

Working toward your child’s goals

The therapist and your child work directly on the goals in the Care Plan, adapting how they work to your child’s age, development and way of communicating, and adjusting when something is not helping.

4

Check-In Phase

Building on progress

As your child becomes more able to use what they have been working on outside counselling, appointments become less frequent. The therapist keeps checking how things are going and whether anything needs attention.

5

Follow-Up Phase

Staying connected

When regular counselling is no longer needed, active counselling ends. Your child remains connected to Family TLC and can return if counselling is needed again in the future.

Is this you?

Is your child struggling with worries, anger or frequent meltdowns?

Have changes at home or school affected your child’s behaviour?

Would getting to an in-person office be difficult for your family?

FAQ

Yes. Our therapists adapt online sessions for children using interactive games, drawing, stories and play-based activities that keep kids engaged on screen. For younger children, parents are often more involved, and your therapist will discuss what format works best for your child.

Online play therapy uses screen-sharing, digital games, art and toys your child has at home to help them express feelings and practise new skills. The therapist guides the play with purpose, creating a fun and safe way for children to work through what’s bothering them.

Parents are a key part of the process. Parent coaching is built into the work, so you’ll receive practical strategies for routines, behaviour and emotional support. Your therapist may also include you in parts of sessions to help new skills carry over at home.

Yes, the matching consultation for parents is free, with no pressure to book. Therapy sessions are paid services. Our Matching Specialist will explain session fees and availability and help you choose the right online therapist for your child.

Choose a quiet, private space with a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone. Having a few art supplies or favourite toys nearby can help. Your therapist will send simple instructions before the first session so you feel ready.
