Soban Khalid
Soban works with children ages 10+, teens and adults experiencing concerns such as anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, parent separation, depression, grief, anger, addiction and major life changes.
Soban’s work is especially suited to people who want a therapist who will stay curious, listen carefully to what is and is not helping, and adjust the counselling rather than forcing a strategy that does not fit. His style is active, responsive and feedback-based, with an emphasis on understanding the person rather than reducing them to the problem they came in with.
He is also comfortable slowing down around difficult emotions instead of rushing past them. Soban helps clients explore why something hurts, why a reaction keeps returning, or why a setback feels so discouraging. He encourages clients to approach those moments with patience and curiosity so they can learn from them rather than automatically treating them as failures.
With children and teens, this can include helping them better understand emotions, build confidence, cope with changes such as parent separation, and develop healthier ways of responding to stress and relationships. Soban works with children ages 10–12 as well as teens, adapting the counselling to their age, development and individual needs.
With adults, Soban helps clients examine patterns in thoughts, emotions and behaviour while also developing practical ways of responding differently. He combines reflection with strategies so counselling stays connected to the client’s goals, what they are learning, and whether the work is actually helping.
His work is strongly informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), TEAM-CBT and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Rather than assuming that one technique will work for everyone, he uses feedback and ongoing reflection to adjust the work to the individual.
Soban also brings a culturally responsive perspective to counselling. He has experience supporting people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds and provides counselling in English, Urdu, Punjabi and Hindi.
Soban is a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and is supervised by Ilan Strauch, Registered Psychotherapist.
