Prenatal counselling can help you navigate the mental health challenges that often come with pregnancy and childbirth. In a counselling session with a registered social worker or therapist, you can address perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), postpartum mental health concerns, or mild mood changes. Through approaches like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or narrative therapy, the counselling process provides personalized support to help you manage stress, understand your emotions, and feel more grounded during your perinatal journey.

Whether you’re healing from pregnancy loss, coping with postpartum depression, or simply trying to adjust to the challenges of early parenthood, therapy can help you feel supported and understood. With regular check-ins and comprehensive care, we’re here to walk beside you, helping you begin your journey towards parenthood with confidence and emotional balance.

A story like yours
When Julia started her pregnancy journey, she was excited but also felt nervous about the changes ahead. As time went on, she began to notice signs and symptoms of anxiety and sadness that she didn’t expect. Wanting to take care of her emotional well-being, she decided to reach out for professional care and began psychotherapy to talk openly about her feelings and prepare for the ups and downs of pregnancy and parenthood.
In her counselling sessions, Julia’s therapist helped her understand the potential risk factors for mental health problems such as postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis. Through compassionate postpartum therapy, she learned how to recognize symptoms of postpartum mood changes and manage stress in healthy ways. These sessions provided a safe space for her to share her thoughts, reflect on her emotions, and strengthen communication with her loved ones.
With the support of her registered social worker, Julia began having regular check-ins to stay connected and cared for before and after giving birth. Her therapist worked closely with her to help her find balance, rest, and confidence through personalized guidance, ensuring comprehensive care throughout her journey. Over time, Julia noticed she felt more stable and emotionally prepared for what lay ahead.
Looking back, Julia realized how valuable prenatal and postpartum therapy had been for her peace of mind. It helped her understand that seeking help was a sign of courage, not weakness. With the right support and emotional tools, she entered the early years of parenting feeling grounded, confident, and ready to embrace motherhood with compassion for herself and her baby.

Your roadmap
1
Knowing what to expect
Your therapist makes sure you are fully informed about counselling, understand what to expect from Family TLC and the Family TLC Method, and have the information you need before moving forward.
2
Understanding what is happening
Together you explore what brought you to counselling and what you want to be different. Your therapist notices patterns and connections and works with you to develop a Care Plan with your concerns, goals and the approaches that may help.
3
Working directly on the goals
You and your therapist put your Care Plan into action. Your therapist uses therapeutic modalities, strategies and interventions based on your needs and what emerges in the work, reviewing what is helping and adjusting when needed.
4
Maintaining and building on your progress
Once your goals are achieved, appointments become less frequent. You use what you have learned independently while you and your therapist check how progress is holding up, reinforce what is working and decide if new goals have emerged.
5
Staying connected after active counselling ends
When you and your therapist agree that regular appointments are no longer needed, active counselling comes to an end. You remain connected with Family TLC and can reconnect with counselling in the future if support is needed again.
