Experiencing trauma can have profound effects on an individual’s mental and emotional health. Trauma is a term used to describe the challenging emotional consequences of living through a traumatic event, whether that be a single traumatic event, chronic trauma, or complex trauma. The impact of trauma is different for everyone, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can manifest in various ways, including anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional distress. These symptoms can interfere with everyday life, relationships, and overall well-being, making healing and recovery feel like an overwhelming journey.
Trauma therapy offers a therapeutic, trauma-informed approach where individuals can work through their traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Trauma-informed care recognizes the unique challenges posed by trauma and employs evidence-based techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and somatic experiencing to help individuals regain control over their lives. At Family TLC, our team of registered clinical counsellors, social workers, and trauma-informed therapists is dedicated to guiding individuals through the process of trauma recovery and helping them develop healthy coping mechanisms.

A story like yours
Rebecca, a woman in her early thirties, sought trauma therapy after experiencing a traumatic event that left her struggling with symptoms of PTSD. After surviving a car accident, Rebecca began to experience intense emotional distress, including flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, and a heightened sense of anxiety. Although she had healed physically, the emotional scars of the experience continued to affect her daily life, relationships, and sense of safety.
Realizing the need for professional help, Rebecca connected with a trauma-informed therapist who specialized in EMDR and somatic therapy. Through the therapeutic relationship, Rebecca was able to create a safe space to relive her trauma with compassion and curiosity, using techniques that focused on both the mind and body. Her therapist helped her process the event through EMDR, which uses eye movement to desensitize and reprocess traumatic memories, while also employing mindfulness and somatic experiencing to address the body’s physical reactions to stress.
As therapy progressed, Rebecca began to understand the deeper impact of her trauma on her thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. She was introduced to trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and learned to identify and challenge harmful thought patterns, replacing them with healthier, more adaptive responses. Through ongoing trauma work, Rebecca gained the tools to cope with stress and anxiety, using coping skills to manage triggers and post-traumatic stress reactions.
Rebecca’s journey to recovery was not without its challenges, but with the support of her trauma-informed therapist, she began to feel more empowered. Over time, she regained a sense of control over her emotions and reactions, developing resilience and the ability to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease. By the end of her counselling sessions, Rebecca had transformed her relationship with her trauma, allowing her to approach life with a renewed sense of clarity and emotional stability.
Trauma therapy is an essential part of healing for those who have experienced trauma, providing the support and tools necessary for healing and resilience. Through techniques such as EMDR, CBT, and somatic therapy, trauma counselling can help individuals process their trauma experiences, develop coping mechanisms, and reclaim a sense of well-being. With the right guidance, trauma recovery is possible, and individuals can embark on a journey toward healing and emotional freedom.

Your roadmap
1
Knowing what to expect
Your therapist makes sure you are fully informed about counselling, understand what to expect from Family TLC and the Family TLC Method, and have the information you need before moving forward.
2
Understanding what is happening
Together you explore what brought you to counselling and what you want to be different. Your therapist notices patterns and connections and works with you to develop a Care Plan with your concerns, goals and the approaches that may help.
3
Working directly on the goals
You and your therapist put your Care Plan into action. Your therapist uses therapeutic modalities, strategies and interventions based on your needs and what emerges in the work, reviewing what is helping and adjusting when needed.
4
Maintaining and building on your progress
Once your goals are achieved, appointments become less frequent. You use what you have learned independently while you and your therapist check how progress is holding up, reinforce what is working and decide if new goals have emerged.
5
Staying connected after active counselling ends
When you and your therapist agree that regular appointments are no longer needed, active counselling comes to an end. You remain connected with Family TLC and can reconnect with counselling in the future if support is needed again.
FAQ
Determining whether trauma counselling is the right step can be a deeply personal decision. At Family TLC, we understand that trauma is difficult to define because the same event may be more traumatic for some people than for others, depending on individual experiences and coping mechanisms. Trauma counselling provides a supportive space to address these challenges and promote healing.
Emotional Impact: Feelings of fear, sadness, or anger that persist long after a distressing event may indicate unresolved trauma. Family TLC offers an approach that helps individuals process these emotions effectively and regain emotional stability.
Physical Symptoms: Unexplained headaches, stomachaches, or chronic fatigue can sometimes be linked to stress or trauma. At Family TLC, our counsellors use techniques to help address both the emotional and physical effects of trauma, improving overall well-being.
Relationship Struggles: Difficulty trusting others or maintaining healthy relationships can result from past traumatic experiences. Family TLC’s trauma counselling fosters personal growth and equips clients with tools to rebuild meaningful connections.
Life Disruptions: Struggling to focus at work or school, avoiding social activities, or feeling disconnected from daily life may signal the need for professional support. Trauma counselling at Family TLC helps clients regain balance and rebuild a sense of normalcy.
Understanding what to expect can ease any uncertainties you may have about starting trauma counselling. At Family TLC, our sessions are tailored to meet your individual needs, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for healing and growth.

Rebuilding Trust: Past traumas can make it difficult to trust others, leading to feelings of isolation. Family TLC’s therapists guide clients through exercises that rebuild trust and foster stronger connections.
Effective Communication: Trauma can hinder open and honest communication. Our counselling sessions focus on improving communication skills, enabling clients to express their needs and emotions more effectively.
Conflict Resolution: Unresolved trauma may contribute to heightened conflict in relationships. At Family TLC, we teach techniques to help navigate disagreements in a constructive and compassionate manner.
Enhanced Emotional Intimacy: Addressing trauma allows clients to be more present and emotionally available in their relationships. Family TLC’s approach encourages vulnerability and deeper emotional connections.
The duration of trauma counselling varies depending on individual needs and the complexity of the issues being addressed. At Family TLC, we believe in creating a personalized plan that aligns with your unique circumstances and goals.
Initial Progress: Many clients begin to notice changes within the first few sessions, such as increased self-awareness and improved emotional regulation. These early milestones are essential building blocks for long-term healing.
Ongoing Development: For deeper issues, consistent counselling over several months may be necessary. Family TLC’s therapists use an approach that helps clients gradually process their experiences and develop effective coping strategies.
Tailored Timeline: Everyone’s healing journey is different. Some clients may achieve their goals within a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over a longer period. Family TLC prioritizes flexibility and adapts the counselling process to suit your pace.
Sustainable Results: The ultimate goal of trauma counselling is to equip clients with the tools and resilience needed to maintain progress independently. Family TLC ensures you leave sessions feeling empowered and prepared for the future.
