Your roadmap

Every family has its own relationships, strengths and challenges. The Family TLC Method provides structure and direction while allowing the therapist to understand your family’s unique needs and personalize your counselling experience.

1

Intake Phase

Getting started

The therapist makes sure family members understand what to expect from counselling, how the process works and their involvement, with opportunities to ask questions and share their insights and concerns.

2

Discovery Phase

Understanding your family and creating a Care Plan

The therapist takes time to understand each family member’s perspective, your family’s relationships, communication patterns, strengths and challenges. This includes exploring which family members should participate and how they may work together in counselling.

Together, you develop a Care Plan with clear goals and direction for your family’s counselling.

3

Working Phase

Turning understanding into change

The therapist helps your family work toward the goals in your Care Plan. This may involve improving communication, understanding one another’s perspectives, resolving conflicts and developing healthier ways of relating to one another.

4

Check-In Phase

Building on the progress your family has made

As your family achieves its goals, appointments become less frequent, giving you opportunities to practise and maintain positive changes independently. The therapist helps review your progress and address any remaining challenges.

5

Follow-Up Phase

Staying connected after family counselling

Once your family has achieved its counselling goals, you move into the Follow-Up Phase. Family TLC stays connected through regular check-ins to see how things are going. If additional support is needed, Family TLC can help your family return to counselling.

FAQ

Families often delay seeking help until conflicts escalate, but early intervention makes a big difference. At Family TLC, we help you recognize the warning signs and guide you toward healing before problems become overwhelming.

Ongoing Communication Breakdowns: If conversations often turn into arguments or family members stop talking altogether, it’s a sign of deeper disconnect. Therapy provides tools to restore dialogue and rebuild mutual understanding within the family.

Persistent Emotional Tension or Avoidance: A home environment filled with stress, cold silences, or emotional distance affects everyone. Addressing these patterns in therapy can ease tension and reestablish safety and connection among family members.

Recent Trauma or Life Disruptions: Events like divorce, illness, or loss can ripple through a family in unexpected ways. Our therapists are experienced in helping families process grief or trauma collaboratively so healing can begin.

Behavioural Changes in Children or Teens: When young family members start to act out, withdraw, or struggle with their emotions, it often reflects a larger issue. Therapy uncovers these underlying causes and supports every family member in understanding one another.

Difficulty Making Decisions as a Unit: If your family finds it hard to agree on parenting, boundaries, or responsibilities, conflict can arise quickly. Therapy fosters respectful compromise and decision-making that benefits the whole family system.

Beginning family therapy can feel like a big step, but it’s also the beginning of positive change. At Family TLC, we walk with you through a clear, supportive process tailored to your unique challenges.

Initial Intake and Goal Setting: The first session focuses on getting to know your family and understanding your concerns. We explore goals, assess dynamics, and identify key areas for support with one of our registered therapists.

Comprehensive Family Assessment: Our therapists gather input from all family members to understand how everyone experiences current challenges. This comprehensive view allows us to develop a well-rounded strategy that works for your whole family.

Introduction to Therapeutic Techniques: We may introduce foundational tools like mindfulness or emotion-regulation exercises in early sessions. These initial techniques help everyone engage meaningfully in therapy and start building emotional awareness.

Establishing a Safe and Supportive Environment: Every family needs to feel safe in therapy to speak freely and be vulnerable. We create a judgment-free, welcoming space where each person’s voice matters, no matter their role or age.

Customized Treatment Planning: Based on our discovery, we develop a tailored treatment roadmap that includes individual, group, or extended services when needed. This ensures your therapy is aligned with your goals and guided by professional insight.

Choosing the right therapy provider can make all the difference in your family’s journey toward healing. Family TLC is proud to offer trusted family therapy in Newmarket through a compassionate, experienced team of professionals.

Experienced, Licensed Professionals: Our registered psychotherapists and social workers bring years of experience in working with clients across all ages and backgrounds. You receive care grounded in evidence-based methods and genuine compassion.

Personalized Matching Process: We understand that successful therapy begins with the right therapist. Our Matching Consultant works with you to understand your needs and pair you with a counsellor who best fits your personality and goals.

Flexible and Accessible Services: Whether you prefer in-person sessions in our Newmarket centre or virtual appointments, we offer options to suit your schedule. This flexibility helps families stay consistent and engaged in their healing journey.

Inclusive Services for Diverse Needs: We serve families, couples, individuals, and youth through a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, trauma, ADHD, and relationship concerns. Every service plan is customized to meet the unique needs of each client.

Ongoing Support for Long-Term Growth: Beyond the therapy room, we provide resources and follow-up to help you maintain progress. Our long-term focus ensures families leave therapy with the tools to continue growing together with confidence and clarity.

Children and adolescents bring unique emotional and developmental needs into therapy that require specific care. At Family TLC, our registered therapists are experienced in working with children and teens using methods that support their voice and growth.

Developmentally Appropriate Techniques: We use play-based methods, creative expression, and mindfulness tools that resonate with children. These strategies help younger clients explore feelings in a way that feels natural and non-threatening to them.

Building Trust Through Rapport: Teens often arrive guarded or uncertain about therapy. Our therapists take the time to build genuine connections so teens feel safe opening up and actively participating in their sessions.

Supporting Identity and Emotional Growth: Adolescence is a time of identity formation and emotional exploration. We provide a safe space for teens to process these changes, develop resilience, and gain coping skills tailored to their stage in life.

Parental Involvement with Boundaries: While parental input is crucial, we balance it with respect for a child or adolescent’s autonomy. Our approach fosters healthy family engagement while allowing space for the young person to express themselves independently.

Addressing School, Peer, and Home Challenges: Whether it’s bullying, academic pressure, or family dynamics, children and teens face stress in multiple areas. We help them understand and manage these challenges while guiding the family to support them effectively.

If you’re feeling distant, misunderstood, or constantly stuck in the same arguments, couples therapy may be the turning point. At Family TLC, we support each couple with personalized care, focusing on rebuilding emotional safety and open dialogue.

Identify and Break Harmful Patterns: Many couples fall into repetitive cycles of miscommunication or defensiveness. Through therapy, we help you recognize these patterns and guide you toward healthier, more respectful interactions that foster empathy and connection.

Improve Emotional Communication: Our therapists teach couples how to express needs and emotions without triggering conflict. This approach creates space for each partner to feel heard and validated, encouraging honest and heartfelt communication.

Restore Trust and Intimacy: Whether trust has been damaged or simply faded over time, couples therapy provides tools to rebuild emotional and physical closeness. Together, we explore what trust means for you and work toward repairing and deepening your bond.

Align Goals and Expectations: Couples often struggle with unmet expectations or conflicting life visions. Therapy encourages open discussions about shared values, future plans, and individual aspirations, helping you move forward as a united team.

Navigate Life Transitions Together: Major changes like parenthood, relocation, or loss can strain even the strongest relationships. Our therapists support couples in adjusting collaboratively, reducing stress and preventing disconnection during challenging times.
