Therapy in Newmarket

A lot of people who call our office have been carrying something for months. Maybe work never really switches off and burnout has set in. Maybe anxiety wakes you at 3 a.m., grief hasn't eased, or you're living with complex trauma. Partners call about the same relationship issues coming up again and again, and parents call when a teen starts pulling away. Our counselling in Newmarket is offered by registered psychotherapists and social workers. We work with adults, couples, families and young people, and we help clients feel less overwhelmed and more like themselves. You don't need a diagnosis or a plan to come to therapy. If you're ready to talk, we'll give you the support you need from there.

There's no waitlist, so most people can start soon after they reach out. First you'll have a free 20-minute call with our Matching Specialist, who listens to what's going on and asks what you want in a therapist. Some people care most about experience with a certain concern, others about personality or availability. She then suggests someone on our Newmarket team whose style of psychotherapy suits you, whether that is CBT, DBT or another approach. If the first match isn't the right fit, just tell us, and we'll find someone better suited. You can meet at 17070 Yonge Street or by secure video, and some of our clinicians work in both Barrie and Newmarket.

Your Roadmap

1

Intake Phase

Knowing what to expect

Your therapist makes sure you are fully informed about counselling, understand what to expect from Family TLC and the Family TLC Method, and have the information you need before moving forward.

2

Discovery Phase

Understanding what is happening

Together you explore what brought you to counselling and what you want to be different. Your therapist notices patterns and connections and works with you to develop a Care Plan with your concerns, goals and the approaches that may help.

3

Working Phase

Working directly on the goals

You and your therapist put your Care Plan into action. Your therapist uses therapeutic modalities, strategies and interventions based on your needs and what emerges in the work, reviewing what is helping and adjusting when needed.

4

Check-In Phase

Maintaining and building on your progress

Once your goals are achieved, appointments become less frequent. You use what you have learned independently while you and your therapist check how progress is holding up, reinforce what is working and decide if new goals have emerged.

5

Follow-Up Phase

Staying connected after active counselling ends

When you and your therapist agree that regular appointments are no longer needed, active counselling comes to an end. You remain connected with Family TLC and can reconnect with counselling in the future if support is needed again.

Is this you?

Has work stress turned into burnout you can't seem to shake?

Do you feel overwhelmed by worries or a low mood that follow you home every night?

Are you and your partner stuck in the same arguments?

No waitlists. In-person in Barrie, Orillia, Newmarket, or online across Ontario.

FAQ

Your first session is mostly a conversation. The goal is to understand what brought you in, what life looks like right now, and what you'd like to be different, so you don't need to prepare anything.

Before you book, you'll speak with our Matching Specialist for a free 20-minute matching consultation. She asks a few questions about your concerns and preferences, then suggests a therapist on our Newmarket team who suits you.

In the session, expect questions about your history, relationships, work and health. You choose how much to share. Many people find it a relief just to say things out loud to someone outside their daily life.

You can ask questions too, like how your counsellor works, how often you'll meet, and what progress might look like. Getting a feel for the person is an important part of the first meeting.

A first session lasts about 50 minutes. You can meet in person at our office on Yonge Street or online through secure video, and you can choose differently for later sessions.

By the end, you'll usually have an idea of next steps. If something about the match doesn't feel right, let us know and we'll help you switch to another therapist.

In many cases, yes. Most extended health benefit plans in Ontario include some coverage for psychotherapy services, including sessions with the registered professionals you'll meet at our office.

The amount varies a lot between plans. Before booking, check your yearly maximum, the percentage covered per session, and whether your plan needs a doctor's referral for mental health care.

Check the wording too. One plan might pay for a psychotherapist but not a social worker. Another might only pay for psychologists. Your insurer or benefits app can tell you who's covered.

After every session, you'll get a receipt you can submit to your insurance plan. Some people also claim part of the cost through a spouse's or partner's plan.

If you don't have benefits, or your coverage is small, mention it during your free matching consultation. Our Matching Specialist can talk through your options and help you plan the number and timing of sessions.

If you're not sure what your plan covers, you can still start with the free matching consultation. Many people sort out their benefits questions in the same week they book their first session.

Good matching starts with listening. Your free 20-minute matching consultation with our Matching Specialist is where you share what's going on and what you need, either by phone or after you fill out our web form.

She'll ask about the concerns you'd like help with, such as anxiety, burnout, grief or relationship struggles, and what kind of personality you'd feel comfortable with. Both matter for finding the right fit.

She also thinks about practical details. Would you like to come to our Newmarket office or meet online? Do you need an evening or Saturday appointment? Will you be using benefits?

Between them, our clinicians see a wide range of concerns, from stress, trauma and low mood to life transitions, parenting, family conflict and couples work. That range of therapy options makes it easier to find someone with the right experience.

If you'd rather choose yourself, you can browse the therapist profiles on this page. Each one explains who that therapist works with, and you can book online directly.

If the first match doesn't feel right, tell us what isn't working, and we'll help you find someone who suits you better, without starting from scratch.

You can choose either. Our Newmarket team sees clients at 17070 Yonge Street, a short drive from downtown Newmarket, and we offer secure online sessions throughout Ontario. You can use one or both, and many clients switch between them to make therapy fit their week.

Some people prefer coming in because it gives them a separate space away from home and screens. Sitting in the same room can also make it easier to open up.

Online sessions work well when you're short on time, live farther away in York Region, or have kids at home. All you need is a private room, a phone or computer, and a reliable connection.

Studies have found that online therapy works about as well as meeting face to face for a lot of common concerns. The bigger factor is the relationship you build with your therapist.

Couples and families can meet either way too. Some couples come to the office together, and some join an online session from home once the kids are in bed.

You can start one way and change later. Let us know what would suit you better, and we'll help you move between the office and video.

Our Newmarket team works with adults, couples, families and teens, and some also see younger children. Each therapist has their own focus, and our Matching Specialist helps you find the right one.

Adults often come to us for stress, burnout, anxiety, low mood, grief and loss, trauma, or life transitions like a new job, a move or a separation. Talking therapy can also support your mental health, personal growth and inner peace when nothing feels wrong, and help you build effective coping skills.

In couples therapy, partners reach out about communication, emotional distance, intimacy, trust after an affair, or the question of whether to stay together. You can come together, or one partner can start alone.

Parents call when a teen seems anxious or withdrawn, when conflict at home keeps growing, or when a child is having trouble with big feelings. Family therapy often brings parents into the work.

Our clinical team includes registered psychotherapists and registered social workers with a degree in social work, who offer evidence-based support and guidance. They're regulated by their professional colleges in Ontario and follow clear standards for training, privacy and ethics.

If you're unsure whether we can help, call us or book a free matching consultation. If your needs fall outside our mental health services, we'll do our best to point you toward the right support.
